Common Motorbike Problems and How to Handle Them

Even a good motorbike can develop small problems during daily use.

A tyre may lose pressure, the motorcycle may become difficult to start, the brakes may feel different, or you may suddenly hear a strange sound.

Knowing how to recognize common motorbike problems can help you react calmly and make better decisions.

You do not need to be a mechanic. The important thing is to notice changes early, stop safely when necessary, and contact the rental team when you need help.

1. The Tyre Feels Soft

If your motorbike suddenly feels different when turning or steering, check whether one of the tyres looks low.

A soft tyre can affect the way the motorcycle handles and may make it feel heavier or less stable.

What to do

  • Slow down and find a safe place to stop.
  • Check both tyres visually.
  • Do not continue riding normally if a tyre looks seriously flat.
  • Contact the rental team if you are unsure what to do.

Do not ignore a tyre problem simply because the motorbike can still move.

2. The Motorbike Does Not Start

Sometimes a motorbike simply does not start when you expect it to.

Before assuming there is a serious mechanical problem, make sure you are following the normal starting procedure for that motorcycle.

What to do

  • Check the key and dashboard.
  • Make sure the motorcycle is in the correct starting condition.
  • Try the normal starting procedure without repeatedly forcing it.
  • If it still does not start, contact the rental team.

If you notice smoke, an unusual smell, leaking fluid, or another warning sign, stop trying to start the motorcycle and ask for help.

3. The Brakes Feel Different

You may notice that a brake lever feels softer, harder, or simply different from normal.

This is one of the common motorbike problems that should be taken seriously because braking is essential for safe riding.

What to do

  • Reduce your speed.
  • Find a safe place to stop.
  • Do not continue riding if the brakes feel unsafe.
  • Tell the rental company what you noticed.

Even a small change in brake feel is worth reporting.

4. The Throttle Feels Strange

The throttle should feel predictable and easy to control.

If it becomes unusually stiff, does not return normally, or behaves differently from before, do not ignore it.

What to do

  • Slow down safely.
  • Stop somewhere safe.
  • Check only what you can safely observe.
  • Do not try to repair or force the throttle yourself.
  • Contact the rental team.

If you do not trust the throttle, do not keep riding simply to reach your destination.

5. You Hear a New or Strange Sound

After riding a motorbike for a while, you become familiar with its normal sounds.

A new clicking, grinding, rattling, or other unusual noise can be a useful warning.

What to do

Pay attention to when the sound happens.

Does it happen when:

  • Accelerating?
  • Braking?
  • Turning?
  • Going over bumps?
  • Starting the engine?

If possible, make a short video while the motorcycle is safely stopped and send the information to the rental team.

You do not need to diagnose the exact mechanical problem yourself. Simply explain what you hear and when it happens.

6. A Light or Turn Signal Stops Working

Headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are important for visibility and communication with other road users.

If one stops working, do not assume it is acceptable simply because the motorcycle can still move.

What to do

  • Check which light or signal is affected.
  • Avoid unnecessary riding at night if important lighting is not working.
  • Contact the rental team and explain the problem.

7. The Motorbike Feels Too Hot

A motorcycle can become warm during normal use, particularly in heavy traffic or hot weather.

However, if you notice something clearly different from normal, take it seriously.

Warning signs can include an unusual smell, smoke, a warning indicator, or other abnormal behaviour.

What to do

  • Stop somewhere safe.
  • Turn the motorcycle off when appropriate.
  • Tell the rental team what happened.
  • Do not open or repair hot components yourself.

8. An Electric Motorbike Battery Drops Too Quickly

For electric motorbikes, battery level is something you should monitor throughout the day.

If the battery seems to be dropping much faster than expected, do not wait until it reaches zero.

What to do

  • Check the remaining battery level.
  • Consider your recent riding conditions.
  • Make sure you have enough battery for your planned route.
  • Contact the rental team if the change seems unusual.

Battery consumption can vary depending on speed, traffic, load, weather, and riding conditions.

9. A Mirror Becomes Loose

A loose mirror may seem like a minor issue, but it can reduce your ability to see traffic behind you.

What to do

  • Stop safely.
  • Adjust the mirror if it can be done safely.
  • If it keeps moving or cannot stay in position, contact the rental team.

Small problems are generally easier to deal with when they are reported early.

10. The Motorbike Acts Differently After Heavy Rain

Heavy rain can sometimes be followed by changes in starting, electrical functions, braking feel, or other aspects of the motorcycle.

Do not automatically assume everything is fine just because the bike still starts.

What to do

  • Check the motorcycle before riding again.
  • Pay attention to the lights, brakes, and starting system.
  • If something feels unusual, do not force the motorcycle to continue.
  • Take a photo or video if useful.
  • Contact the rental team.

The Most Important Thing: Know When to Ask for Help

You do not need to understand every mechanical system to deal with common motorbike problems.

Your job as a rider is to notice when something has changed and explain it clearly.

When contacting the rental team, try to provide:

  • Your location
  • Your motorbike model
  • What happened
  • When the problem started
  • A photo if useful
  • A short video if it helps explain the problem

Clear information can make it easier for the rental team to understand the situation and decide what support is needed.

Do Not Try to Fix Everything Yourself

One common mistake is thinking:

“Maybe I can just keep riding.”

Or:

“I will try to repair it myself.”

With a rental motorcycle, it is usually better to contact the rental company first.

If a problem affects the brakes, steering, throttle, tyres, starting system, electrical system, or anything else that makes you feel unsafe, stop riding and ask for support.

A Simple Rule to Remember

When you notice common motorbike problems, remember:

NOTICE → SLOW DOWN → STOP SAFELY → EXPLAIN → CONTACT → FOLLOW THE ADVICE

You do not need to know exactly what is broken.

You simply need to recognize when your motorbike is behaving differently and communicate the problem clearly.
